Do I really need to overlap wallpaper at the corners?

Question:Hi all

I'm wallpapering, and all advice seems to suggest that one should overlap the paper at the corners (both internal and external) to "avoid unsightly creases".

Well, I've done a couple of corners without overlapping and have no creases at all, so I guess my walls are plumb. Is there any other reason I should go back to the overlapping technique? ie. is there any other advantage of overlapping wallpaper at corners other than the look of the thing?

If I don't need to, I'd rather not, as obviously external overlaps are very visible.

Thanks

I think I would read it as ' if the walls are not plumb and you have to overlap, then do it on the corner'. I have always papered round corners & if the wall is not quite plumb then I would overlap (might have to cut the paper down the corner fold ) if necessary.
Sounds like you're doing OK anyway so I would carry on with the way it suits you best.

The one "important" reason, is that it may "seperate" from the wall, and you will have a dickens of a time trying to get the silly thing to seal back if you dont overlap.

Seems are notorious for seperating, and curling at times...The glue gets old, and moisture tends to get under the seam, (high humidity areas in the Winter time, and in the summer time it dries out, thus the seperation). So, do yourself a favor and overlap those edges!

I wish you well...

Do what is best for you and the particular wall you are papering. I always try to turn the corners and but up the next piece but sometimes the plaster shape at the corners preclude this and one has to compromise. If using vinyl paper then the overlaps require additional gluing with a special glue from a tube etc.
I am a decorator and I treat each job as required.
the only reason we are taught to not paper round corners but to split the paper and plumb the remaining length on the next wall is first to make sure the length is plumb and all drops after will be plumb and second to keep the pattern vertical if the wall is out of plumb but if you have managed to do this and it looks ok then well done and carry on with what your comfortable with there is no rule book
Stick with what works for you, i am a decorator and i don't overlap.
You could try cross lining and just painting the walls instead
cut paper into corners then run some mastic down the join
perfik!!
