What important things should I consider when buying floor tiles?

Consider stain resistance. Nearly all tiles and grout joints require sealing, every couple years in normal traffic areas.
Porcelain is less porous than other tile. And you can buy Spectra Lock grout from Lowes, which never needs sealing. This combination assures you will never need to seal your tile, nor will your grout joints ever become discolored. That's a big deal after you've spent thousands for a new floor.
I also like the floor-warming suggestion. It'll cost you about $15 per square foot, but it's worth it.
Good luck!
If for indoors make sure they are indoor tiles opposed to outdoor tiles and vice versa.
If in a high traffic area or place where items may fall you may consider a tougher tile. Don't buy a tile that looks as though it will scratch easily.
Some tiles are manufactured unevenly in shape, width, and colour- will this concern you?
Consider the colour and texture in relationship to the decor of room.
Consider what colour grout you will be using and how that will affect tiles look.
Price differentiation can be extreme between tiles. Maybe keep eye out for sales, seconds, and tiles left over from large jobs.
underfloor heating would be my first thought! last time i put floor tiles down i regretted it as soon as i steped onto it as it was so cold.
you must consider what the floor build up is... if your tiling onto wooden floor make sure the floor is sturdy. most tilers in the uk will not tile onto anything less than a 18mm ply, just to give the tiles a chance.
on wood use a flexible grout and adhiesive.
cheers
