Window Staining.?

Question:One of our house windows is too big and we are always cautious that someone is watching from outside. While we want to keep the curtains and blinds opened during the day, but still we want no one to watch inside.

Is there a way we can stain it or do soemthing that the visitiblity is reduced? Something like a film or coating on the glass which limits the light and so the visibility is a little bit reduced? If yes, then where do I buy it and how much is the effort and cost for this?

Any other options are equally welcome

Thanks, for all your help.

A highly refelctive window film (silver) would provide daytime privacy while cutting your cooling energy costs. At night you'd want to shine a spotlight on the film which would give you night time privacy. Cost is low - -check for a LLumar Window Film Dealer in your city http://www.llumar.com

If you apply a window tint it will help with preventing light during the day and it will also provide privacy. But at night, people will be able to see in and you will not be able to see out.

So maybe a combination of window tint and some sort of other covering to give you privacy at night.

You also might look into some of the new roller shade screen fabrics that have a 5 to 10% openness.
You can put sheet tint film on it to either mirror it or darken it. You can get it at Walmart in rolls wide enough for car windows. Most of these are installed with water and a squeegee. Getting all the bubbles out is the hard part. Practice with a small piece before attempting your final installation. These are one time use as the adhesive used will not let you remove it in one piece after it dries.

I recently found another type which is removable similiar to the small sheets you put in a car window to shade a child in a car seat. It was only available in 24" width but was over 7 feet long. You put it on with water & squeegee like the permanent stuff but this can be removed in one piece. I used it on a door & it works pretty well. With a big window you would have to put several strips. The joints would be visible from inside but probably not from outside at any distance.

I think there is also a spray on tint available but have no experience with it.

You might look for a shop that does auto window tinting in your area to get some good info.
