I stripped a window frame and there was a grey substance under the paint that took longer to strip?

Question:Any-one any idea what this is, I hope it's not some sort of asbestos. It was painted onto a wooden window frame.

Answers:
It sounds like primer. A thicker paint you use before using emulsion.

primer.
Sounds like primer.
it's possibly aluminium primer, it used to be used a lot in the late 60's. don't worry it most definitely is not asbestos. ALWAYS USE A FACE MASK WHEN SANDING DOWN ANY OLD PAINT WORK THOUGH.
It will be primer. It's used as a basecoat to prep bare wood ready for painting.
it was probably primer it bites into the timber so the undercoat will stick better so don't worry about it
It's undercoat , no it does not contain asbestos , it protects the wood from the weather

You should replace it , unless you are going to varnish the wood
I would say aluminium primer on hard wood. Don't worry it is safe but you should always be careful and use a mask just in case.
