being a newbie and not artistic...start playing with faux and/or texture painting and see what happens. check out the website at lowes.com they have an interactive tool for painting
Use stencils? Use a pojector to make a shdow on the mural wall and then trace it?
You could do a mural stencil or try these wallpaper murals. You could also check out the local college if there are some art students who might be interested in taking on the project.
Wet the wall, then paint the mural on the wall! My uncle is an artist and he did this, and the picture turned out perfect on my cousins wall! It was a princesses castle. Use a stencil to paint the mural!

Good luck!
Find a simple, but pleasing image and use an overhead projector to display it on the wall, then trace and paint.
The easiest way to paint a mural onto a wall is:
Find or draw a picture of what you want on your wall.
Using your printer..scan and then print the picture onto clear overhead projecter paper available from Staples or Office Max for under $5.00.
Use an overhead projector to project the smaller drawing large onto the wall.
Note: You can sometimes "borrow" these projectors from your local Public Library or school.
You can project the image onto your wall as large or as small as you want it to be.
Trace the drawing on your wall lightly with a pencil, then just fill in your mural with different colors of wall paints. You can also outline your mural with darker colors along the edges for more detail.
Good luck!!
INSTEAD of painting directly on the wall because a huge picture is very difficult - and i do paint/draw - so what i would do is this:
Buy four bigger canvases at a craft store. Tape the bottoms together so they make one. Whatever you wish to paint is up to you. I've done surfboards with palm trees, etc. You can find plenty ideas online easy enough if you don't already have one in mind. Paint directly on the canvases one large picture. Doesnt have to be detailed, you can do very nice modern pieces with simple techniques. But anyway, paint your mural on the canvases and when you're happy with it, you can seperate the four out. That way the picture is one large painting seperated into four broken parts that you can hang nicely on your wall.
Example of technique:

Wallpaper.
If you have an image that you like, use a grid system. Place a grid over the image and a grid of the same number of boxes (but larger scale) over the wall. Sketch out what you see in the top left little box of the image in the top left box of the wall, etc. Then, you are drawing/painting smaller pictures rather than being bombarded with a huge, overpowering, scary large picture.
one of my students used colored chalk and then applied a special sealant, rather than using paint. I've also used rubber stamps and tole (?) paints. I like the idea of the canvases and the projector. I had planned to do a mural of Bambi in my son's nursery, but chickened out. I ended up just doing the drawings on large poster paper, used regular pencil crayons on one and oil pastel crayons (buy at any art store/craft store) on the second one.
Good luck!
