Granite Counter Tops?
Question:Does it matter if I install them over existing tile counter tops or should I remove all the tile and then install them?
Answers:
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right. Please remove the old countertops first, I know it seems like more work but believe me you won't be sorry. Where are you getting the granite? I can't believe (wherever it is) they are not telling you this and insisting that you hire a professional. Kudos to you for wanting to try this yourself but this is an expensive(practice project) and if you install it yourself the dealer will not guarantee the granite if you mess it up. Better hire it done and pay a little extra rather than buying the granite twice and paying someone the 2nd time around. Believe me, I am the queen of do it yourself projects and hate to part with a buck when I can do it myself but, there was too much for me to lose if I tried to install my own granite. I'm really glad I didn't. PLUS. it is SOOO heavy, I live in a downtown loft and they had to carry it upstairs themselves, they whined the whole time. I told them " they don't whine like this on HGTV" Ha. I can't imagine how I would have done it myself (even with help) without breaking it. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE leave this to the professionals.
No difference accpect the new counter top will be 1 inch higher now. Put some construction adhesive down first to lock the new granite in to the old tile. You will be fine.
If you are using real granite, everything needs to go down to the cabinets. Tile and whatever is under the tile needs to come out. If you leave it, fastening in a sink, faucets and other fixtures will be a problem. They are not designed for the thickness you will end up with.
If you are going to the expense of installing granite, why would you not remove the old?
