Dado rails and woodchip paper?
Question:I have the misfortune of having woodchip paper in my front room. I would take it off, but due to plaster disasters with removing regular wallpaper in other rooms, I daren't take the risk.
I have decided that I'd like to install a dado rail to detract attention away from the woodchip and it's imperfections and then put some fresh paint on the walls. Would "no more nails" be ok in this case, or is the dado rail likely to fall off? Can I use a dado rail on woodchip at all?
Thanks everyone. :)

Woodchip wallpaper comes in different grades, very coarse woodchip particles to fairly fine.Fine is less bumpy for fixing over.If the woodchip is stuck well to the wall, I think you'd be ok with no nails for the dado, but you'd need to be confident that it is. Whether you go over the cleaned paper, or strip a line of it off so the dado goes directly onto the plaster, when you fix it support it until the no nails is hard with a few thin nails/pins through it too. Don't hammer them right in, just enough to grip and support, you can remove them next day, but press hard against the dado with one hand while doing so. Add screw fixings in each length if you want double indemnity. MDF dado is much easier to fix and keep straight compared to pine, wood tends to curve and twist even before it's fixed, meaning you have the added difficulty of getting/keeping it straight against the wall. Another point is fix a line of thread along each wall, level and pulled tight so it can't sag, to give yourself something to work to when fixing the dado. It's much easier to keep dado straight than trying to fix without that line.
Burn the woodchip! I hate it, we had it all over the house when i was a kid.
I don't think the no more nails would work on it. With it being a very unsmooth surface it's unlikely to bond properly.
prob would need to cut where dado rail is to go and just take that strip of paper off. then glue it would be very difficult to get it to sit well on the woodchip
No nails" is really strong and should hold up a wooden dado rail.
you can NOT stick dado to wallpaper, "NO NAILS" will hold a dado on the wall, or even mastic is fine, but you would have to get rid of the paper. I don't think there is any way of disguising the woodchip, why not wait til you've saved enough money to get the room done properly, paint over it in the mean time if it needs freshening up. But i'd wait til you can get the room plastered cos there is nothing worse than looking at bare walls.
If your woodchip is still firmly stuck to the wall you might like to try a product Dulux@ make for preparing walls. It's a lot thicker than paint and makes a smoother surface for painting onand covers a multitude of sins. It's called Perfect Finish (I think) and most Dulux stockists should have it. Yes the extra strength no nails will fasten your dado, but, I would recommend putting a few nails in strategic places, ie at the beginning, middle and end of each piece of wood. This would ensure that it stays up. I like green paint by the way, Putting Green and Soft Apple look lovely together.
aaaaaaaaaggggggggghhhhhhhhh
i made the big mistake of trying to strip woodchip paper once. It was the most horrible experience and took forever. This will really test your patience. My advice is go for it. If you want it gone now chances are in a few years you will still hate it. and unfortunately the more layers of paint thats put on it the longer it will take. If you can afford it pay someone proffessional to do it that would be the best option. I would actually cry if i faced it again. good luck with it
Hi - I tried this myself and found that "no more nails" adhesive wasn't strong enough. I had to screw the dado into the wall and use wood filler to cover the screw heads.
