Cheap / easy ways to update an older rental house?
Question:i am renting a house that is a bit outdated.. i was wondering if anyone has any quick fix ideas for the outdated kitchen (ugly cabinets/appliances/no dishwasher), floors (blue carpet/vinyl tile) and bathrooms (PINK wall / floor tiles), wood panel wainscoting.the landlord said we can do whatever we want as long as we pay for.. the rent is so cheap i dont mind putting a little money into it because i will be here for awhile. in your opinion where should we spend the money to get the most for it (looks wise)? any ideas would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Afew years ago my husband and I rented an old farmhouse that was very rundown. Same situation for us, we were allowed to do whatever we wanted as long as we paid for it. (we didn't have much money either) My advice is to paint, paint, paint everything! So many things can be painted. You will probably have to use oil based paint not latex (water based). Where I live WalMart carries these great area carpets that are quite large and are only $40. Also peel and stick tiles can cover up an ugly back splash, bathroom walls and other floors. They are cheap and super easy to install. Unfortunately with old houses once you start working on them you discover nasty little(and big) surprises. My advice is to just make it liveable and if the rent is cheap and you are going to be there for awhile you might as well fix it up a little and enjoy the place. At least you will be able to have company over and not be embarrased! We did break down and buy some new and used appliances but at least we can take them with us (same with the area carpets). Good luck!
Painting is the cheapest and easiest way to update.
Inside are out there is nothing white paint won't dress up.
(Walmart paint)
You can also have paint mixed and paint kitchen cabinets.
If you don't want to replace carpets shampoo old ones and get big area throw rugs (can take them with you when you move)
Add some out door shutters and some nice scrubs.
Hope this helps.
paint is num,ber one cheap est cheap carpet nothing realy extravagant new window treatments to doll it up curtains blinds it really depends on how talented you are YOU can alsotile the countertop with inexpensive tile if ya know how i wishi was there to help cause im very gifted and love that kinda challenge
Go to yard sales. Junk yards. Construction sites That's what I did. Found great sinks, doors, wood floors(I hate carpet), from a remodeled hotel, got it for free and barrnished and waxed. Looks like new!
Ceramic tiles are not too expensive. You can put them on both the kitchen floor and tops if you know how.
Use another color for the rest of the house. Then you can buy some nice Afghan rugs/carpets to match the tiles. You then can take the rugs with you when you leave. The bathroom can have the same treatment.
First use 123 primer oil based first two coats on cabinets and such. Also they have appliance paint & paint for tubs and such. Buy a paint spayer best investment. And when we lived in a place with out a dishwasher we bought a protable dishwasher as well you hook it up to the faucet and put the drain one into the sink. I gave it to my cousin we bought it at LOWES.
Also check Lowes and places for paint & tile people bring back you can get it at a discount. And all those places also have great classes too.
just a fresh paint job and some new drapes, put out some fresh flowers.
