Decor for room to be used as kid's room plus guest room?

Question:Any decor ideas for a room that is 14 x 12 ', will be used as a 5 yr boy's room mostly, and about 3-4 times a year for guests? It has a queen bed w/ simple headboard, 1 nightstand. 2 windows. Might soon have a TV & stand.

I am looking for decor that can be changed with minimal effort. So far, I can only think of the obvious: keep a separate set of drapes, bedding-set for "guest".

Don't know what to do about the walls, what to put there that can be changed without too many holes in the wall?

So, looking for any ideas on how to do up a room (walls, accessories) for use by 5 yr old boy plus visitng guests. Guests are often couples with small kids. My kid does not yet have any preferences for his room. I also am pretty open to any ideas for the "guest" decor.
Budget is not an issue.

So, question I guess is, how to do up a room so it can be changed from kid's room to guest room easily?

Answers:
try a nautical theme for the room... It´s fun for kids and also attractive to the eye for the guests...
- the walls can go cream color or light blue with a a few navy blue accents
- wall decor can be navy ships, flag ships, sail boats or even sea scapes
- you can also hang some nautical accents like oars, fishing net, life ring that hang on boats or even shells or sea stars
- if you have a carpet try and change it to wood floor or laminate floors and put some accent rugs-

hope this gives you a small idea on what works for the guest and the 5 yr old.
And also are things you can easily find on a lot of places...

How about a sailing theme? You could use a blue, like a medium - dark blue wallpaper or nautical stripes and then a border with sailboats. Good for a kid and easy to make over for guests. Put a few wooden figures of birds and boats around to decorate. Use a life-raft thingy for a decoration on one wall too. I have seen them so they are very pretty. Painted in white and then with a blue or red rope twirled around it. Besides the blue striped wallpaper, how about one wall or two walls a bright white! That would accent the stripes and not close you in with stripes!! Use blue and red accents in the bedspread, curtains, etc to add some additional color. Think gift shop at the seashore in the area that they always have set up to look nautical. It always looks kinda pretty with the very white items trimmed in blue/red. Good luck. Let us know what you pick.
please put your boy 1st. he's just now getting to the age where he'll want to have his own stuff, and before long, wanting to decorate his own room. any guests u have WILL understand. if they don't, they're not good guests. best 2 u!
p.s. i have a 9 yr-old boy.
If budget isn't an issue, I hope storage isn't either. I would suggest painting his room earthy colors--neutrals that is.

I'd use "real furniture" as opposed to the crappy particle board stuff they pawn off on kids. He's old enough now to take some pride and care in finer things. Don't go overboard though and do give him some warnings about what kind of activities you don't want him doing in there (markers, etc save for another area).

If he's into a theme (like a character theme or something) get some sheets for that, they'll work with the neutrals, the only trouble maybe finding them in a queen size. Have a lovely set of good sheets and comfortor for your guests.

You can round out his theme with lamps that suit it--again storing some grown up lamps for guests. I'd have nice leather like boxes for toy storage--they wear like iron and look boyish yet stylish.

Art work, same thing I'd find something he loves and something the same size that works for grown ups and simply swap 'em out when necessary. By using nice plastic drawer organizers you can whip out the legos, silly putty, etc in a flash (have kids I know) and leave empty drawer or two for your guests.

I'd have a guest room kit, with candles, a few toiletries, maybe a cordless phone, etc so when you need to convert the space it's all together for you and it becomes automatic.

You may find your son likes a more grown up look. My daughter is 8 but by 6 she was tired of the "Hello Kitty" or "Barbie" theme and wanted something a little elegant. Involve him in the process and reward the little guy when he's temporarily evicted.

TV's are great for kids and grown ups, a nice mirror as well and if he's hard on the flooring a nice area rug that you unroll just for guests is easy and not terribly expensive

By investing in some nicer things for your guests as your son grows up you can integrate the lamps, etc into his room.

Good luck, sounds like a fun project!
I agree with putting your son first.I love plaid. a blue/green/red plain plaid is great for a boy or a guest....your guests will love the fact that you offered to have them stay with you. as long as they are not tripping over toys, you should be fine..

I would just have guest towels, soaps, and foods as your concern...or a spare boy charcter blow up bed for your son, as priority
Just paint the wall a plane color and put pictures of the family up so you never have to change the wall! Try not to make it look to kiddish put toys in a fancy toy chest, and do plane bedding set so you wont have to change it!
