How can I sew curtains?

Question:Does anyone have a basic measuring system that I can follow to get the right look for panel curtains. I know how to sew basically just need some help before I waste the fabric on mistakes!

Answers:
I use these Simplicity instructions to measure the window:

Then, the iVillage instructions for the fabric measurements:

The hardest part for me is keeping the sheer material straight while I measure and cut. I found that using spray starch while laying out the fabric made it less slippery and easier to control. Some straight pins through the fabric and into your cutting board to hold the fabric true.

I measured the area I was making curtains for, then got the fabric, sewed a liner , well a separate piece of fabric.. Then I turned it right side out and sewed nice strips of fabric on each panel to hang on the rod, they turned out real good..
