What is the best primer to cover up dark colored interior walls?
Question:My walls are painted like a greyish blue and I need to paint over this color to get it back to white. We are moving and it has to be back to the original color, white!
Answers:
Zinser, Bin, Kilz are all stainblocker primers and will cover dark colors well.
zinzer
i've heard of the others that have been mentioned but have never used them accept Kilz. But ONLY Kilz orginal which is oil base. I painted dark dark black brown molding & doors. It took not quite 2 coats which when I started w/ reg. primer... i was already on my 4th coat b/4 it was suggested Kilz & applied it. Man, what a difference!
Buy a good brand name primer, but kilz and zinzer, to me, are too watery. Sherwin williams has a good primer called "pro-block and so does Behre, If you have whomever you buy the paint from add a little tint to the primer, black but only a tiny amount, it will cover better and then use a good quality flat white with a little black tint to it and perhaps you will only have to paint it once with the paint. Good luck but if you have lived there for awhile it will not matter that much how the paint job turns out because it is the law that the landlord has to paint and clean after you move out anyways. Believe me I have had to fight more than once about paint jobs with people where i have lived and hired a real estate attorney once to find out what my rights were. If u aren't violating a lease I wouldn't be that concerned about it because it is considered "normal wear & tear for paint on the walls to deteriorate and get dirty. the key is to buy good primer and good paint and the job willl be so much easier
All prior answers are good for bare woodwork or stains, in your case you should use a water based primer/sealer made by "ZINSEER" not zinzer or whatever they're talking about and it's called 1-2-3 and it hides previous colors very well. This product will be much easier for you to use and fumes will not knock you out, Good luck Les the painter
