Any tips of how to reviatalize an old countertop in the kitchen?

Question:I am not sure what kind of wood it is. It was built somewhen 20 years ago. It came with the house. I am trying to not spent much money on things. Is there a way to reviatalize a kitchen counter top using less money ?

Answers:
Wood is not a very desirable counter surface in the kitchen, but the good news is that it is fairly easy to renew the finish on it. First, remove the old finish using Citristrip, available at home centers, the sand with 150 grit sandpaper, courser if needed to remove scratches etc. Then apply three coats of oil based polyurethane. It should last maybe 5 years.

I'd try Murphy's oil soap. it usually will clean and condition wood really well and can be used for all kinds of things so it's a reasonable item to purchase
If it is truely a wood counter top I would suggest cleaning it thoroughly, litely sanding, cleaning and oiling with tung oil(it hardens almost like varnish but is easier to apply & maintain.
