Is it possible to remove a SUPPORTING WALL these days? How?
Question:
Answers:
Yes it is. You just need to support the load while you remove the wall then install a beam where the wall was.
Talk to an engineer or your local building official to figure out what size beam you need.
Only if you replace it, one beam at a time, with another wall.
You cannot remove a supporting wall completely in an existing structure.
Design has ben made much better so structures can be built with far fewer supporting walls, however, exisiting structures have supporting walls for a good reason...they support something.
It is possible, however you must becareful.
First you have to know the size, then decide on how you are going to replace the wall (columns etc). Then you have to have a temporary support system that goes in as you start demolition (remove a small part, place in temp support) and as you go. The temp support should be done in several spots so as to give proper support and also allow you to install the new supports.
So if making a more open floor plan you have to utilize columns or arches or whatever to acheive this, but the replacement structure(s) must be upto the task of taking the total load of the prior wall.
I was told by a good contractor that is there is a Will there is a Way. However, agreeing with the other messages you have gotten...the supporting wall needs to be supported properly before removing. I had a neighbor remove a supporting wall and THEN called in a contractor. The contractor told the neighbor that he wouldn't even go in the house it is now so unsafe. So get good advice from someone that knows what they are doing. A good beam and some supporting posts should help you out.
