I have just put in new granite countertops. Is it normal for it to have small pits and not be totally smooth?

Question:Also, it will become darker in places if I put something wet on it and then this will disappear after awhile.

Answers:
Has the countertop been sealed? It's best to check with your Stone Mason.

It's natural for a spot to turn darker as the water soaks in but I believe this won't happen if it is sealed.

You should reseal every year or so.

Granite is a natural porous stone that means if something is wet placed on it the granite will absord the liquid and then it will slowly evaporate out again.Granite is a natural product that is why it has little imperfections in the surface these are voids in the stone created by little air bubbles from when nature created it. In a kitchen granite needs to be sealed and the sealing needs to be redone every couple of years.
I agree with the other answers, is it sealed? Even if it is, I'd have it done again, that's not supposed to happen. Eventually you will put something that stains and won't be able to get it out without a sander lol
I would talk with the installer. Granite has "holes" and may be like slate, since it is nature's rock. But I would get the installer's opinion or someone where you purchased it.
