How many yards of 54" wide material do I need to order, if I need 85 square feet covered?

Question:What percentage is 20" by 36"?
What percentage of a yard is that?

I had similar responses.

You could possibly get by with 6.5 yards... but to be safe, I'd get 7.

54" = 4.5 ft
4.5 ft. x a ft. = 85 ft squared
Divide both sides by 4.5 ft
a ft. ~ 18.89 ft.

Round 18.89 to nearest whole number = 19
3 ft = 1 yard
19 ft / 3 ft = 6.33 yards

36" x 36" = 1296" squared
20" x 36" = 720" squared
720" squared / 1296" squared ~ 55.6%

20" x 36" = 720" squared = 5 feet squared
5 feet squared / 85 feet squared ~ 5.9% of the desired 85 square feet cover.

First, 54" is 4.5 feet (48" plus 6"). Divide 85 by 4.5, then by 3.
I'd get 7 yards (4.5' X 21'=94.5 sg')or more if seam location/matching is important.
If the fabric were 36" wide, need 9.5 yards or more.

20 X 36?... first figure 36 X 36=1296sq "(1 sq yd) then 20X36=720

720 is about 55% of 1296 (1296 divided by 720, a shortcut is to figure 50% is 1/2 of 1296...648)

I'm not a sewing or fabric expert. Just doing the math. When in doubt, I break things down to a common point of reference.
In this case, square inches, feet, yards or decimal figures.
