Electricians: How much would you charge me to fit recessed spot lights?
Question:I'm buying a new build home and I'm trying to establish whether the builder is ripping me off for their pricing of recessed spotlights. Obviously, I expect to pay more buying directly from the builder however it is also more convenient.
I would be looking for the following:
5 spotlights in kitchen
5 spotlights in bathroom
6 spotlights in main bedroom (This is in the roof)
I'd appreciate any advice. Cheers.

It depends on a lot of things. What is your ceiling construction? lathe & plaster, plasterboard? Type of fitting? Mains or Low Voltage? What else is the builder doing? You getting new switches, sockets etc? You don't say how much you're paying but if it's over a grand you're being done!! Alledgedly!
I installed 9, QUALITY IBL fire sealed, chrome, fixed low voltage downlights complete with transformers, lamps, new wiring and a 500 watt chrome dimmer for a lady last week and the total was £363.00 inc. VAT. There was a loft to work from though. Took me just under 3 hours, plasterboard ceiling and tons of glass fibre insulation to rearrange.

Well, it depends on the type of recessed cans you are buying.
They can vary from quite inexpensive to quite expensive - up to $60 a piece for the good quality Halo lights and trims ( the trims come separate ). Labor-wise, the electrician in my house says it's about 1/2 hr to do each one, so you are looking at 8 hrs of labor minimum.
so, if you have an average cost "can" at about $50 a piece times 16 plus the usual markup = $1000 for the cans...
plus 8 hrs labor at $65 an hour ( $520 ) =$1520.
I used $65 an hour for labor but some are less and some are more these days. at least here in New England
Most contractors mark up their product about 20%. That's to cover paperwork, the time to order them and to pick them up. It's easier than keeping track of the exact time taken to do such things and the fuel, etc. It's just as you say, it's all about your convenience...
