Actually, it is called a coat tree. The reason is because in older times, dead tree branches were leaned against or nailed into a wall and used to hang coats on. This tree evolved into a coat rack... yet some still call it a coat tree.
To be fair, a coat rack does look a bit like a tree.
Because it looks like a tree. It has branches and a "trunk".
Because all the hooks that 'branch' out make it look like a tree.
Because when the coats fall off, it`s like leaves falling.
