How do I take off the popcorn ceiling?
Question:
Answers:
I just remodelled a 2000 sq ft house that had popcorn ceilings.
I put plastic drop cloths in whichever room I worked in. I sprayed a large area, really soaked it, let it sit for 5 min. Scrapes off easily with a trowel. The goop lands on the drop cloth.
Wear a mask and goggles!
If you're going to go in and out of the room, you need to wear surgical booties, and take them off at the doorway on your way out.
It's not a difficult job, just extremely messy!
I did the entire house in 4 hours. (removal)
I rolled on a slight texture paint, looks great!
Use a putty scraper, it is really soft. Wear goggles and a particulate mask so that crap doesn't get in your eyes/mouth.
Unless you are sure that there is no asbestos in it then you probably do not want to remove it. Yeah, it doesn't look too good but you are better off just painting over it. If you must remove it, wear a good quality respirator. Use a spray bottle and wet the ceiling and scrape it off. Lots of work! Then once it is off you have to refinish the drywall ceiling with texture or something similar.
it's a mess & can b done... there's a special tool...u'll have to ask at the hardware store. I jst used a big putty/trowel & u damp it down & scrap it off. But then u'r ceiling will not b smooth. So u'll either have to sand it ( anthr mess ) or jst apt to lightly roll over it w/ texture mud then lightly trowel over it push the points down. It gives it a really neat effect. U can then jst paint it regualr w/ a thick roller or do a paint then glaze over it.
It's a lot of work & neck breaking but it's worth it if u don't mind the work.
Careful! You don't remove the popcorn ceiling - you must have it done by professionals because of the bad content, both for you and for the environment.
You'll need stripper, drop clothes, possibly a face mask for the fumes, a sturdy six foot ladder, and the proper scrapers that you'll acquire at the local paint supply store, or secondarily, HD or Lowe's.
A popcorn ceiling has to be professionally removed.
