How far apart are the studs in a wall?
Question:I live in a condo building built in 1967. How far apart should the center of each wall stud be?
Answers:
For that age of house, 16" on center was the standard code. Buy a good stud locater and verify that before you start hanging stuff or planning major work like new windows and the like. It's not uncommon to have studs where they shouldn't be.
16 Inches
Supposed to be 16 inches, but sometimes builders skimp.
They should be on a 16" center. If the condo was cheaply built they could be on a 18 - 20" center. This is easy to tell because the sheet rock will bow in the center. Start by measuring from a corner wall over to find the centers.
The standard is 16 inches c to c, or center to center. I use to build custom homes and also some commercial buildings as well. In the U.S. it has to be this way, or an inspector will not give a pass on the work. Any farther apart and it will fail inspection and have to be corrected. I hope this helps.
By the way, if you need to find the studs in the wall, you can go to Home Depot, or Lowes and get what they call a stud detector. And yes, they do actually make these.
should be 16". since the building was build in 1967 you may have wood studs. but check, since your in a condo, it could be brick..
16" is probably your answer, however, save your money on a product you will only loose once. Instead of a stud finder, tap your hammer on the wall. When you hear a difference in sound, that is where a stud is. To verify, hammer a small nail into the sheet rock. If if slips in, you missed. If it grabs, you found it. caulking will take care of any small holes.
You have studs in your wall? Let the boys out I say!
Yeah, drive holes in your wall instead of spending $10 for a studfinder. That makes sense. I use mine all the time to hang pictures.
