Are popcorn ceiling really a big deterrent?
Question:I am trying to decide if I should pay extra to not have popcorn ceilings in my new home.
Answers:
Have you seen a sample of what they refer to as "popcorn ceiling" is that how they are advertising it? because there are newer versions of "the textured ceiling" I have noticed a few names mentioned in this post, I believe there is also "California ceiling" which is how the builder described my ceiling. I recommend going with texture for sure, any new build I have walked into with flat ceilings is terrible, you see every line and imperfection especially with lights hitting it. As mentioned before texture is used for acoustical/sound proofing purposes and really how often do you have to paint your ceiling? I say look into the texture for sure, I think it is amazing how much people despise "popcorn"...too many trading spaces...
no it's ugly
doesnt matter...it just sheds all over everything
popcorn ceilings kill resale value in a house
i love them but the new in style my brother is a contracter is the skip trowl ceilings
I detest our popcorn ceiling and will never allow it again in future homes.
Buy the home you want and if it has popcorn ceiling you can have it removed before you move in.. If there is no furniture in the house it can be removed in a day.
Its ugly and tacky. If you can afford to i would pay the extra.
The Brady Bunch liked popcorn ceilings . what I'm trying to say is that it dates the property. It's 70's style.
No, its pretty unattractive in my opinion. It also tends to make the home appear old fashioned.
Congrats on the new house.
Pay extra. They are awful, and they are difficult to clean. Not only that, but you can't really paint them any color but white or they will look even more stupid. I HATE popcorn ceilings. Plus, a flat ceiling will allow you more options with moldings, and decorative accents.
I am trying to save enough money to have mine removed !! They are hard to clean, attract spiderwebs, dust clings to them, and you can't paint them.
Collects dust and cobwebs really badly and they are SO outdated and ugly.
I find them really hard to paint, not a fun task, and if you are planning on being in your new home more than a few years you will probably end up painting them.
Most people that have it are here asking how to remove it. It has gone out of style and can be a real problem when repainting as it sometimes starts to flake off and then you need to either remove or spot repair. Not sure why you would have to pay extra for NOT having it put on. Ask what your options are. Most are going for flat or knockdown finishes.
Popcorn ceilings attract dust, which is impossible to remove, are harder to paint, and it costs a fortune to have them removed, once you decide you hate them. They shed, they are not in style, and are unattractive.
It depends. They are good for noise insulation. They are also good for covering up ceilings that were not finished too well.Condos and Townhouses use popcorn ceilings mainly to cut down on noise. They can be harder to paint, but usually are sprayed. There are special rollers you can use also. When dusting, you can knock little pieces of the pocorn pieces off too.In the end, since you are living there,if you like it then install it.Good Luck.
They are old fashioned and cheesy. There is much that you can do with paint and faux finishes that looks much better.

Popcorn ceilings, walls, etc. are really dated. They are difficult to work with anyway. I don't know why you would have to pay extra to have smooth ceilings in a new home but whatever it is, pay for it.
No, Although you never know what will come back "In Style". Right now the popular ceiling is a knock down. You still spray it on like popcorn, but then you take a trowel and skim over it. Leaving suttle random texture
Definitely skip the popcorn, but invest in extra soundproofing if you can! (That's the only thing the nasty-looking stuff was for anyway, well that and to hide sloppy joint work on the ceiling.)
Congrats on the new abode!
my recomendation is no, first of all they are impossible to paint (well almost impossible), second of all its a very dated look, third its a deterent in terms of resale value.it will be a turn off to many buyers..also is really ahrd to clean (on the off chance u clean ur ceiling)
There is nothing good about popcorn ceilings.
- Difficult to paint
- Look awful and give a warehouse look to homes
- Difficult to clean
- Reduce resale value. I would never buy a house with such ceilings
I would say just don't go for it.
