When painting walls?
Question:is it necessary to primer a wall before painting it?
Answers:
If the new and old colors are close in shades no you dont have to if the old color is in okay shape. If there is a drastic difference in colors than priming is probably a good idea especially if the new color is lighter than the old color.
If it has a very dark color or hasn't been painted in a long time , Yes..If it was painted a lighter color in the last few years no.
If you are painting with the same type paint then you don't have to prime. Latex over Latex or oil over oil. If you are painting latex over oil you must prime with "Kilz" or a primer that will bond with oil but allow latex to stick
you probably don't have to but i would just to make sure your new paint lays down nice
Don't skip the primer. You will regret it. Paint goes on poorly without primer. I have tried skipping the primer and will never do it again.
Don't buy cheap paint IE: Behr, or Valspar. Get a good paint like Benjamin Moore. As a matter of fact, insist on Benjamin Moore. Use the Benjamin Moore primer, then the paint. You won't regret it.
no, it's not necessary to primer a wall before painting it, but you may have to use two coats of paint. but since you're going from such a harsh color to a subtle color, you may want to primer the wall just to make sure the color doesn't come through.
But if you really want to avoid priming the wall, use killz paint, it's really great at coating the wall perfectly, you can consider using a blue one shade darker than what you want it will lighten as it dries.
If the paint you are using is the same type, ie-Acrylic then you don't need a primer. You do need to clean the walls down, and fill any holes in the surface.Otherwise go for it.
If the wall has already been painted then you do not need to prime it but you do need to use the same type of paint that was used before. (latex or oil.) If the wall has never been painted definitely you need to prime it first. If you don't it will take 10 coats of paint before it stops soaking in. A good primer will keep that from happening. If it is a brick wall a good primer would be BIN oil based primer and you CAN use latex paint over that. Good luck.
ITS NOT ALWAYS NECCACARY TO PRIME BEFORE REPAINTINGUNLESS YOU ARE MAKING A LOT OF REPAIRS. SOME REPAIRS ,SPOT PRIME. BUT CLEAN IS A MUST! WASH THE WALLS WITH TSP,USE A SCRUBBY SPONGE,SCRUBBY SIDE. THIS WILL GIVE THE WALLS TOOTH FOR THE NEW PAINT TO BITE. AND ALWAYS DO TWO COATS OF PAINT,EVEN IF IT SAYS 1COAT COVERAGE.YOU WONT REGRET IT AND YOU WILL TELL THE DIFFERENCE. 1ST COAT BASE AND BITE,2NDCOLOR AND SEAL. IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERANCE! A LITTLE EXTRA WORK BUT LOOK IS WORTH IT.
