What can I do to cover wood paneling? Besides trying to sheet rock over it?

Question:We just bought my childhood home, its 25 years old. Its has wood paneling and there is NO sheetrock under the wood paneling so what is the best way to make it look like a wall. Its like crown molding at the top and then wall and then chair rail then wood paneling then base board. We want it to look like a complete wall and just the chair rail has been added. Is there a wall paper that you can purchase that can cover it,cause someone told that that there was a wall paper that you could put over the paneling so that you don't have to mud or putty to sand in order to prime?? Anyhelp is appreicated.

Answers:
I just used a textured wal[paper and then painted over it. You need to be careful putting the paper up so you dont push the paper into the grooves of the paneling.Practice with one or two pieces of wallpaer at first if you arent too sure of yourself

You could take down the chair railing and paint the paneling. I did this one time. It was brown and too 70s for me. I applied a coat of liquid sandpaper, then primed it with Kilz, and painted it white. It turned out great!
Well I have never heard of wall paper that would cover it and look nice.

I used to live in a house that had wood paneling and what I did was just paint it white just like you would any wall but first using a primer. I think you might like it if you painted it a color just like you would any wall in the house, you don't notice the paneling all that much if it is one solid color.
Well if its paneling there are grooves in it that you can fill in with drywall compound first and smooth it out... with a light sanding... they do sell some awesome paintable wallpaper that actually hides a lot of defaults on the wall.. then you just paint over it.. there are many patterns to choose from too..
Go to somewhere like Home Depot.. or Reno or Rona but I don't know if you have these in the states or if you are from Canada.. either way.. I would go with that..
Hope this helps!
Anaglypta paper. It's as thick as card-stock and comes in hundreds of patterns. It's designed to cover over monster cracks on walls and ceilings. It will easily go over whatever pattern your paneling is and totally sublimate it.
...ain't real cheap though
I wanted to make the grooves disappear, so I "frosted" it (after sanding to roughen it up) with mud. You know, that stuff they use for bedding and taping. Put it on as smoothly as I could, then instead of sanding, I wiped it down with a damp sponge to smooth it out, primed and painted. You should be able to do that, so long as it's not bowed anywhere, and is solid enough not to be or get wavy.
pull off the chair rail. Measure the difference in thickness between the wall above and the paneling below. If you have 1/2" sheetrock above and 1/8" paneling below, put 3/8" sheetrock on right over the paneling, use the chair rail to hide the long seam, and the rest is a breeze.

I have used wallpaper to cover paneling with success as well, both textured and smooth.
I take it you don't like the wood paneling... lol... If you do, you could use Pledge Orange oil to clean it... and then varnish it. If not, I'm sure you could find something onine at a wall covering store.
I would check with Lowes or home depot about these things and they can walk you through it also. To make sure you get it. I don't recall which one but you can pay them to come out and do it. They do sell the wall paper but if you don't want wall paper then you can clean the walls now and then prime them and pant. For some good ideas I would go on-line and go to HGTV website they would have all kinds of different things you can do.
