How do I remove water based paint?

Question:The previous owners of a house we moved into had painted the cupboards and doors without sanding first and the paint is peeling off, so bad so that if you lightly sctrach it, it comes off. I need to know the fastest way to remove it. The surfaces painted on are a smooth 'fake looking wood' (that 70's type) and a varnished wooden door. I'd greatly appreciate any help given. Thank you

Answers:
Yeah, I've seen this countless times. I scrape it off with a plastic putty knife...the throw away kind. The plastic knife won't scratch your wood like a steel knife will. 98% of your paint will come off. Rub off the rest with #000 steel wool. Lightly sand with 150 grit IF neccesary.
Paint stripper = very messy, takes just as long and costs 20 times as much

You can use paint stripper found at your local hardware store. You just rub it on and wipe it off.
Paint thinner would work but its a pain to use..you must ventilate well, wear a mask and gloves..
You could sand them and re-paint.. using a good primer..first!
