I live in a old Manx cottage?
Question:what colour should I paint my floor room which has a stone fire place, I want to keep the cottage looking old
Answers:
I think it will look too dark and gloomy, especially in winter, if you paint it dark brown or any other earthy colours.
Just because the cottage is old it doesn't mean you can't be creative and use light to enhance the room.
There is a very good designer called ' Jocasta Innes' and she does a book of painting styles from tortoiseshell to marbling.
She painted an old wooden floor in an old cottage in a checker board style in blue and white. She then rubbed it down so that it was muted, looked like it had been down for years. The end result was stunning.
If you google Jocasta Innes, it will bring you her website and all her books.
One of her most famous books is ' The Paupers Cookbook'. It tells you how to live well and cheaply on a very tight budget.
Her painting techniques were born out of necessity so they are cheap to do.
Rust or medium brown perhaps.
i would say brown
A reasonably dark colour. Not too gloomy though.
paint a design with brown or black and off white...like diamonds, then scuff them up with sand paper to make them look old- seal with laquer.
