What can I add to white paint to make it a toffee colour bearing in mind I can't afford another pot of paint x
Question:I was thinking maybe poster paint or a couple of tester pots and need this to be as cheap as possible but am not sure about mixing etc. Someone suggested coffee but i'm not sure and do not want to waste a tin of perfectly good paint. Please please get back as soon as possible
Answers:
Tester pots of a warm chocolate coloured paint should work.
Just take a little paint out of the big pot and try adding the instant coffee to the 'sample'. That way you won't waste lots.
why not get a brown tester pot. or try teabags in a smallish amount of water.
Melted toffee!
A bit of gravy browning????
You can buy syringes of paint dye from DIY shops to tint your paint. I've done it and it works fine. Look on the internet.
i would buy one of thosa sample pots in a coluor close to chocolate and back it up with a pale yellow . prob cost £2 . mix it ypurself and apply it to inconspicuous places until you gat the colour.
go back to the paint store, most will rre-mix for free.
A beige colour?
If you have a Hobbycraft or similar store nearby you could buy a pot of powder paint to mix in.It also works with white grout for tiles.
ok.. unless u like the fact that u'r walls will now smell like tea..coffee... toffee.. i wouldn't suggest the real thing.
Go to u'r craft store & get the little 2oz btls of paint that comes close to the color u'r looking for. Rmbr.. mixing it w/ white will take a few btls & if u want it a lt. color then u'll have it w/ the strait color u choose but if u'r aiming for more darker color... then choose a darker color than u would normal choose. they only cost about 80-99c p btl. Mix it really good w/ a stick... if u can get the paint store to re-shake it.. do that as well.
That's what I've done when i'm looking to chg the color up a bit.
Dog poo
keep all your old teabags for a few days, then strain into the paint for a caramel colour.or you know them coloured pen sets that kids have?use the ink from the darkest brown pen.or clothes dyes work a treat for the right colour
I wouldn't suggest coffee as once the paint smell has died down all you would smell was coffee!!
I would try getting a couple of chocolate coloured felt tip pens & take the inner part out of the pens. Leave the inners in a small glass of water overnight till the dye has come out then try adding this to your paint. Try a little at a time so that you don't ruin your tin of paint. Failing that how about a clothes dye they're not too expensive.
Good luck Vonny XX P.s. let me know if it works as I have a large room I need to paint too.
A tester pot from the local DIY store is probably your cheapest and reliable option. OR If you have a pound shop near you, check out the kiddies paints! ALWAYS TEST IT OUT FIRST THOUGH.
A little bottle of brown food colouring should do the trick (under £1.00).
?? 2 gallons of paint at walmart is 10 bucks?? how can u not afford that?
Yes, I would add a couple of cheap tester pots but make sure you get a darker brown than you actually want because obviously the white will make it lighter so you don't really want to add the actual colour you want to end up with.
You did'nt say whether the paint was oil bound or water based. If water based (emulsion) then instant coffee would probably work. If oil bound then a tester pot out of B&Q of a stronger colour would work. Tea bags, food colour, coffee etc only dissolve in water NOT oil
tester pots or you can buy injection colours sold in most diy shops come in small tubes and are sold to do just what you want. If you use tea or coffee the colour does not last long term. best buying a tube costs about £3. poster paint will not mix and give good results. so o for a mixer colour tube
