Does latex-based paint stick better?
Question:There is a thin layer of white paint over an original glossy paint layer on my door. the white paint flakes and chips really easily, and I was wondering - if i were to remove the flaking white paint and go over the door with a layer of latex paint - would it stick better and keep from flaking?
Answers:
the door must be sanded and primed.sherwin williams makes a latex paint that gives you an oil looking job!
It surely does hunney, besides, it's more plastic so it works better against moisture on the walls :-)
Oil based enamel paint sticks the best.
The type of paint makes no difference. It's all in the preparation. Bad prep, bad job.
There are several possible causes. One is because because a latex paint was utilized over an oil based paint. (By the way, glossy paints can be latex or oil based. Perhaps because people associate oil with sheen, they believe that more glossy paints are therefore oil based. Other than aesthetics, glossy paints are utilized because they can be more easily cleaned. More info on that can be found at http://www.paintquality.com/media/newspa... It can also occur when low quality or too thinned paint is used or inadequate preparation was made when applying one coat of paint over another (sanding, removing dirt, etc.). Glossy paint of either oil or latex resists things sticking to it, which is why it is easier to clean. It also makes it more difficult to paint over!
In any case, based on my now hours of research, you should strip the peeling paint, preferably sand the high gloss paint and/or utilize a primer, then paint over that. You may wish to test a small amount of paint - letting it dry at least 2 hours - to ensure that the new coat won't peel, either.
The reason your paint is flaking, is because the glossy paint wasn't sanded back to give the latex something to bind to.
You will need to sand the paint back down to the base coat (glossy) then take the shine off it. It is now ready to re paint, with either acrylic or oil based paint. Either can be used over the gloss paint, once it is prepared properly.
For future reference, you can buy a specialised paint product which will bind to any surface, but in your instance, it's too late for that now.
the glossy paint is the problem. either sand it or use a paint that will cover glossy paint. they DO make such a paint. as for oil base paint, it is now outlawed in the US., for those of you who do not know.
you will need to remove anything that is peeling. What has happened is someone painted over a high gloss or oil based paint without using primer. when you repaint make sure you use a layer of primer first the choose a good durable paint that is made for exterior surfaces (for outside) If you are painting the interior surface it doesn't matter as much but whatever side of the door you are painting, you will need to prime it and use high quality durable, washable paint.
yes but you got to paint your door with primer first a then use latex paint for outdoors only and go to home depot or specialty hardware store good luck
