Painting cabinets?

Answers:
Yes you are going to have to sand them down and prime them before you paint. I had to do this to some ugly laminate cabinets I had. It is much easier to take them all down and take off the hinges and hardware and then sand them down as well as you can. Varnish is similar to the laminate in that it will be hard for paint to stick to it. As far as what kind of paint to use, be sure to use the same based paint as your primer. If you use water based primer, you need to use water based paint and if you use oil based you need to use the same oil based paint. And I would highly suggest asking the home improvement store to tint your primer darker so it will be easier to cover it up with black. After sanding, be sure to wipe down the cabinets with a rag to make sure you get all the dust off and then prime them. After the primer dries completely you apply the paint. I found that it is alot easier to use a roller for these so the brush strokes do not show. I would apply at least a couple layers of paint.

After the paint dries you reattach the hardware and hang them back up. Be sure you have enough paint for touch ups because most likely when you hang them back up there will be chips here and there from trying to line up the hinges and such. Also, I would suggest using a semi gloss paint. Semi gloss is much easier to clean than flat paint. You could also use full gloss paint if you want a much shinier look.

I wasn't sure what your hardware is like, but I had really ugly brass hardware that didn't go with the new cabinet color so I found a textured nickel spray paint that made them look really great. Good luck and have fun!

u need to eithr sand them or u can use Kilz orginal. But u have to b able to have the black paint adhere to it. So make sure which way u go.. that it is clean... Oh u can also use TSP.. that will not only clean the cabinets of grease & grime... but should dull the surfaces as well. I forgot about that. I've use all of them.

I would use enamal paint on the cabinets or u'll have to put several coats of clear varnish over it to protect it from cleaning & spills etc..
If you can sand them down completely, that's always best- but at the very least you should sand them to remove any kind of gloss from the varnish. As for what kind of paint, they say to use a satin or semi gloss-easy clean up for greasy messes.
Go to your local paint store-not home depot. They will hook you up with the right paint. Look at the edges of your cabinets also-are they covered with a cheap veneer? be sure to tell the paint store that too. They should be able to mix up a black primer for you.
I think that if the cupboards have varnish on them, you'll have to sand them down or use a chemical stripper. Once that's done, I'd prime them with a good quality primer, then paint. I painted my cupboards using a satin paint and they've held up well. If you get too high gloss they don't look good, and flat paint is hard to clean, so get a semi-gloss or satin finish. Black sounds really cool! I couldn't decide between black or white, and went with white, but it does show fingerprints and stuff. Good luck!
Paint right over the top of them, ask for interior pain.
You have to sand them well with 120 grit, clean well and use an oil base primer. I telling you an oil base primer because varnish is usually a hard surface for paint to stick. Kilz is good, XIM, or zinsear 1-2-3. Zinsear primer 1-2-3 comes is dark base so you can tint it dark gray without it losing its adhereing qualities. Then you can either paint it oil or water base semigloss. I preferr Frazee's Mirrorglide over other's. Its a hardy waterbase.
go to sherwin williams they have a primer that you can use and you don't have to sand at all. while you are there ask the rep which paint would they recommend for wash ability and durability
The varnish has to be removed before you can paint them. If the cabinets are veneered and you sand them you will need to be careful not to sand through the veneer. It doesn't take much to burn through veneer, its usually 1/16-1/8 inches thick. You would be better off to strip them first then sand with 180 grit sandpaper. Use an oil base primer and/or paint. Oil base is far more durable then latex paint. If you choose a latex the higher the gloss the more durable it will be. Oil base paints take longer to dry then latex paints but you can buy a japan dryer to add to oil base which will cut the dry time in half. Good luck
sand to rough them up. prime with good primer. paint with OIL! it will be more durable. 2 coats. SHERWIN WILLIAMS will hook you up.
