Is it possible to turn a basic attic into a upstairs room??
Question:I'd like to have more room in my 2 bedroom house and was wondering if you could raise the roof on a house to make extra space? I have to re-roof soon anyway..
Answers:
Sure. It will cost some $$ but it certainly can be done. They will just need to take off the existing roof, raise the studs and cap off with new roof gables (preformed triangles) then lay down new plywood and reshingle that. Keep in mind, there is a lot of expense involved in this process. There is new electrical work, new windows, new drywall, reinsulation for the walls and ceilings, reshingling the roof, putting siding on the outside of the house, possibly new roof fans and vents, building permits, demolition & removal, etc. All of this is contingent on whether your foundation and existing structure can take the weight of the addition of another level to the house. Hope it works out for you!
To raise a roof structure you are talking about major construction. New roof joists would have to be constructed and put into place to make a new roof line. Re-roofing is a whole different thing than "raising" a roof line. It would be just as cost efficient to add on to the existing structure.
Yes, you can raise the roof but it is VERY expensive. It is considered new construction. Is the attic already large enough to stand up in? Do you want to use it as living space or storage space? You can always just put a floor down and use for storage. No need to worry about heating/air conditioning etc etc.
