Kitchen designers- is there any terminalogy that a new designer needs to know?

Question:like woodwork or the types of wood?

Answers:
Usually, the kitchen designer wants to meet with the client first with a rough floor plan before they go out to measure. You can accompany your client with your floor plan. You will get an education of the product line and types of wood.

There aren't that many to learn. It is all about the finish that they use. Basic lines are maple, cherry, oak and birch. The finishes could be natural, stained or glazed.

You might at least want to know what a recessed panel, raised panel and arched panel is if you don't already know that as well as a full overlay and a traditional overlay.

Pick up some catalogs at Kitchen Design Centers and review them. But, the kitchen designers are experts in what they do and if you prepare yourself by reviewing the catalogs, you will be able to communicate with them and help you client.

It is great to work with them because they do all the work for you and have a wealth of knowledge. This is their job.
It also helps to familiarize yourself with the general standard sizes that base and wall cabinets come in and what the standard height is including counter top.

Don't worry yourself too much though, this is what they are there for.

Good luck with your business.

Still not quite sure. Do you mean like corbels, moldings, and hardware for the esthetic combonents of the cabinetry? Or do you need to focus on finishes and colors. What ever area they did not capitilize on in school just google. Ask your employer. You can point out where you want to learn and he can reccommend some books. If you want to know how the furniture is constructed and the materials that he uses, choose a book in the construction of cabinets. If you want to understand the drawings, he could reccommend a book. Home Depot has a lot of reference books or look to the Design books to help with ideas.

Again, good luck, be patient. I am sure your boss empathizes with you. It is hard when you just get out of school. I hope that this helps you out. The kitchen books are still good.

Are you a new pro designer or are you designing your own kitchen for the first time? Things change in the industry constantly I have redone two kitchens in the last five years. I recommend you go to a custom cabinet shop and look around as well as go on HGTV and other remodeling sites. They really helped me.
