Im installing a new light. The Ceiling has a ground and two white. Which white one is actually black?

Question:I need help because the ceiling has a two wire with ground cables. The green is the ground, but unfortunately I can't remember which of the two white cables is actually the black hot wire. Can someone help?

Answers:
Measure the voltage between the ground wire and then each white wire (one at a time). The wire that is 110-120 Volts from ground is your hot (black) wire.

I'm assuming US wiring here.

It is impossible to guess. I assume the ceiling fixture is operated by just one switch? To be sure...and to be safe, you must get a volt meter, trace the wires back to the switch and test them. If you are unsure what to do it may be best to call someone with electrical experience.
