Need some help figuring out how to decorate my daughters' room?
Question:I have two daughters, they share a room. They are eight months and five years old. Any ideas on how to create a room that will suite them both?
Answers:
One of the most important things you'll need are coordinating bed sets--not matching, though. You want your 5 y/o to feel like a big girl! You might even pick out 3 or 4 sets YOU really like, then let her choose the one she likes best so it's HER choice even though you technically picked it.
Try coordinating the colors, but not the prints. For example, a floral print for the baby and stripes for your kindergartner. Or perhaps a garden theme room where you can work together flowers, butterflies, ladybugs, etc., even fairies.
Once you've selected your bedding sets, it will be easier to pick your paint colors... Take a pillow sham and crib quilt (just something from each girl's bedset) to the paint store and use them to select your main and accent color(s).
TIP:
Be sure to shop around!... Pottery Barn Kids and Company Kids are awesome (LOVE them!), but are very expensive. If you need something more mid-range, try Mervyns, JC Penney, Kohls, or Target--they all carry a pretty wide variety of decent quality bedding for various price ranges.
Note: I just purchased an ADORABLE high quality bed set on eBay--(I got the fairy one for my daughter). The merchant is an exclusive online retailer for a designer brand called JoJo. They had a LOT of different designs and styles for crib/toddler up to full size. It's all brand new, of course, and their prices were really reasonable. If you're interested, the link to the ebay store is below.
Have fun, involve your 5 y/o in the choices, and happy decorating!
A lof of furniture companys make cribs and childrens beds that coordinate. Checkout Potterybarn Kids or if you're on a budget, I believe I saw that Ikea had some children's sets. You ought to buy a crib and 2 beds. You can store one untill your younger daughter is ready for a "big girl bed". ;)
As for decor, I dont know your daughters. But a room in soft pinks an purples is always beautiful. A more sophisticated and upscale way to do pink and purple is to do wide vertical stripes playing up any architectural elements (corners, sloped ceilings, etc). Carry it up onto the ceiling as well for a tent-like feeling. As for furniture, ones in a white finish are great for little girls, maybe look at ones that are ornate, or in the old french style (for a VERY sophisticated little girl). Otherwise, pick a soft floral for bed coverings and lots of pillows. You can add whimsical touches or flowers in accessories as well. In a room like this, any girl would feel like a princess. :)
Paint colors I suggest are Sherwin Williams:
Daydream SW 6541
Irresistable SW6562
Trim: Alabaster SW 7008
While I like some of the suggestions of the person above, I want to throw in--make sure it's not too "little girl" because it won't be two long before your 5 year old thinks that it's too young for her, and you don't want to have to remodel everything in 3 or so years. If you want to use pinks or purples, use them as accents instead of focal points. As for main paint color, I like "Tea and Sweets" by Ralph Lauren, it's neutral but with blushy-pink undertones so it compliments other colors well. This is the color I just re-painted my step daughter's room. Also, know that any "designer" paints you pick out can be remixed in a non-designer base (I like Valspar), and will thus cost less than using straight name-brand paint.
Think alot about storage too. If it's not a large room, you'll need to be very cleaver about it. Mate's beds can be a good solution. Also, at least for the stort term, you may want to make sure that some of the storage us up a little higher so your older daughter can keep some things out of reach of the little one. Then you won't have to worry so much about you're younger daughter swollowing Barbie shoes etc. I like cube cubbies with baskets as they are easy for the children to access.
fist off if they have naythign they really really love see if you can run with that...beyond that i
d say go with a lighgter colour, either a green, blue, pink or yellow. make sure you have a very nice plushy carpey for them to. since its a kids room you can go crazy with the colour...just plan ahead so they dont hate it in four years.
my choice it to go with pale green on the walls, white trim, a nice plushy magenta carpet...lots of yellow amd pinks and greens and cremes in fabric...all white apinted furniture..maybe even a little chandalier:P and pink plaid...just my idea
Try not to be as specific, as wallpapering there rooms with there favorite band, because bands come and go so fast that you'll be asked to re-do the room in six months or so!
Ask the five-year-old for her ideas or do half of the room in one decore and half ,the other!
Good Luck!
