HELP! Self stick tile glue on bathroom floor?
Question:I am remodeling a home and in one of the bathrooms there is 18 of those big self stick tiles on the floor. Pretty small area really, but I was wondering what would be the easiest or cheapest way to remove the glue after pulling them up. There is a beautiful hardwood floor underneath that just needs to be cleaned and or waxed.
Answers:
Try mineral spirits, paint thinner, to get up the old glue. Then if your floor is old try using denatured alcohol to soften and re-even out the old finish. This will allow you to put a new finish over it, water based polyurethane floor finish is easy to use. This way you keep the floor looking old as opposed sanding and making it look new. New is OK. Old has much more patina. Good Luck
too bad it isnt comming off
I would ask at your local tile store or home improvement store. You sure don't want to damage those wood floors so lots of the solvents that you would normally use would ruin it.
Good luck with you project.
A small amount of WD-40 on a white towel or paper towel has always worked for me. It is unlikely you will get out that easy though. It may be best to remove the adhesive, lightly sand, and then apply a new coat of polyurethane sealant.
u'r gonna have to sand it all off if u want to get to the hardwood. Start w/ coarse then go to lt. then put a nice varnish over it to protect it.
U could try acetone but u'r still gonna have to sand it b/c acetone will take whatever finish is on the wood floor off as well. Most cleaners will.
It will take time & patience if u want that wood floor, but will b wellll worth it in the end.
heat gun and a scraper should work to get the tiles off. once there off there will be residue go to home improvement store to the flooring section they should have a specific adhesive remover for vinyl tile adhesive. if you cant find that mineral spirits which is just paint thinner would work as well. read the instructions.
all of the above answers are good and the only suggestion i would add is goo gone wich is an adhesive remover if the tiles arent that old then the goo gone should do it and it sounds like you have a small area so it shouldnt be too bad
