im not sure about the exact name of them but
dont worry about it
it adds to the whole rustic look of cherry wood
Termites and yes they are something to worry about. If your bed was not in that condition when you bought it then call an exterminator immediately as you probably have them eating away at your home too.
Check to see if there is a powder type residue near the area where the holes are (on the floor next to the area) - if so, doubtful that it is termites. It could be powder post beetles - You can easily recognize the work of powder post
beetles. When the adults emerge, usually in June, some
species leave small holes about the size of a pin in the
surface of the wood; others make holes the size of pencil
lead. From these holes, a fine, powder like brood of
larvae carry on their destructive feeding. Normally,
these insects have a 1-year life cycle; this means that
the adults will appear only once each year. And because
of this habit the larvae have a feeding period of many
months.
This will require an exterminator.
I'm not sure how old this bed is, but it is possible that you have wood worm, also known as powder post beetles and furniture beetles. There is more than one type, but they all do the same damage. Check the sites I've given below. The last two have excellent pictures of both the beetles and the damage they do as well as information on dealing with them.
The holes are made by the small beetles as they leave the wood. I'm not sure how long you've had this problem, but I would check your other wood furniture and/or floors. They often migrate to other wood.
Termites, on the other hand, would not make the type of holes you describe. They burrow inside the wood leaving tunnels. I know first hand having dealt with them in wood around my garage door.
Do you see and sawdust or any thing of that nature? Carpenter ants may make one or two holes. Have you seen any ants in the area?
Just a few suggestions. Good luck and check out these sites. I think you'll find an answer there.
