Answers:
you're bedroom should be thought of as a ceremonial space in which you relax at the end of the day, drift off to sleep, and recharge yourself. You're most important goal with you're bedroom is to create a place of tranquillity where you feel utterly calm and serene. With a little creativity and costuming it could be spectacular.
In addittion to the bed, i also envisioned a sittin area, plenty of storage space, even a place for meals and a work surface.
The background wall color - go for a sun- sand-and sea-drenched colors, rich but muted. Create texture with stucco (more rustic) or grass cloth (more sophisticated) or try dry brushing walls with two like colors.
2. simply clean up floors and polish ( you stated you already have wooden floors)
3. try a bamboo four poster bed, and a backless settee at foot of bed, this extends the bed visually and provide yet another functional area.
4. keep the bed covers neutral- if you used deep plum and dusy lavender on walls or two shades of blues on the walls use cream and gold bed sheets, with textured pillow cases. keeping the bed sheets neutral will allow you to have fun with other fabrics. you can use a lovely cotton fabric to unite the door and windows, and rich stripe cotton to frame the bed. use sea grass rugs on floor for barefoot comfort.
5. an armoire and a chest in natural material such as rattan, bamboo, teak it can be embossed with tropical birds, palms and large jungle plant leaves continue the tropical look.
6. include colored bottles, baskets of shells, flowers like orchids in terra cotta pots, hibiscus large potted palm plants and ferns in hanging baskets, where possible, let in lots of natural sunlight, or substitute muted ambient cove lighting that adds an all over glow. choose lighting fixtures in wood, care, antiqued metal and ceramics, both porous and glazed.
7. down lights, up lights, and a cluster of hanging silk lamps.
8. attach split bamboo to cupboards to add that tropical feel.
The idea behind sanctuary space is that it's the room where you begin and end each day. It's your ceremonial spot and it needs to feel peaceful and tranquill. I hope this helps you in your redesign of your room. ( contact me through leigh.lopez@yahoo.com if you decide to try this idea, and let me know how it came out. This will be appreciated.) Thank you.
I am pretty good with decorating and I would suggest colors of nature. Blues and Yellows are very pretty and appealing to the eye. I used these colors in my spare bedroom. When decorating always use 3 colors. For example in my spare room I have a dark blue rug, white walls, a printed white and dark blue bed set with valances to match that are printed on one side and yellow on the other side that I custom made. I accented the bed with yellow throw pillows. I hope I helped you out!
When I decorate I chose one item I love and make it my color theme. Such as: a lamp I found at a salvage shop, I used the colors that were on that lamp to chose paint and bedding.
Hope this helps.
Well I think lighting is very important so maybe if you don't have "your" desired lightings you can change your lights. Soft yellow lights are nice and you can always add a dimmer to make it brighter. Another option is repainting your room. I wouldn't know what advice to give you for bedlinen because I think that depends on your personal taste. Good luck.
I agree with the person who said to find one item and center the theme of the room around it. I don't know if you have resale shops in South Africa, but if you do, go check them out. Other peoples "junk" can give you some really cool ideas.
It's hard to give specific ideas without knowing exactly what the room looks like (there are different colors of hardwood, etc) and what things you like.
You could do an Asian inspired. Reds and golds with bits of black. Live bamboo plants. The dried bamboo mats. Bonsai trees. All kinds of little touches.
I would suggest either light colors such as blue or green. Or try some warm colors red, orange or even yellow. Of course you can always mix and match like a light blue with a dark blue and a gold, or go with light green and a pale yellow or blue and silver and white. You can do so many things its ridiculous. Just think of a theme and go from there.
i say you should do light colors on the walls but mix them up and buy matching accessories to hang on your ceiling and if you are a guy, then buy some posters of your favorite people.*
