Answers:
you go with the window, that's what i was told when i did my son's bedroom

i would lay it from side to side following the width of the hall
Diagonally, looks really effective
You are supposed to lay the flooring in the direction of the best 'light source'.
Light from window, along the joins.
I have a friend that installs wood flooring and he said that you always go the length of the room. but if your area is a perfect box-shape it doesn't matter, it's your preference. In a hallway you should go lengthwise and stay the same direction on the shorter part of the hall where it veres off.
Work from the side with the majority of doors, pushing the laminate under the archtrive, and work towards a back wall , or the staircase.Don't finish in doorways
When standing at the top of the steps it should go sideways & not direct infront
Longways on the long leg of the L and crosswise on the short. Looks good. Saves cutting.
I wouldnt lay laminate flooring in the upstairs hall, you will be hard pushed to create a nice finish as you get to the final tread of the stairs. And as you will have to fit some kind of rail this will pose as a bit of a trip hazard at the top of the stairs.
I guess, depending on the orientation of the hall and stairs you could continue the carpet over the top tread or bare wood flooring if thats whats down and have the laminate start back from the stair well.
