Color of furniture for light gray carpet and white walls?

Question:What color should we get for our couch and tables. We are moving into an apartment with white walls and light gray carpet.

We were thinking about putting a big black area rug down, and getting bright red couch/chair and top it off with sikver/black glass tables with silver lamps on them. What do you think.

Answers:
Instead of a bright red sofa/chair, try a deeper red, like a burgundy shade, it would go better with the gray than the bright red. But Otherwise it sounds great.

You could go with black and red accents and a very modern look. Chrome/silver/glass.

If you want something more traditional (not sure if "we" includes a spouse or roommate and if you two have different tastes)...combine yellow and a steel blue.

Another option that goes good with gray and white is sage green and beige. A very natural and neutral look. More of an asian/zen feel to it than say a red/black/gold asian approach.

Being that you are male, I won't suggest the hot pink/black/white poodle paris chic look. LOL!
I LOVE that idea. I only wish I had thought of it first.

We have the same carpet and walls you do, and we went with a bamboo, naturals theme. It's sort of zen. Out couch is a modern style, dun coolored, mock suede, our tale is beechwood color, we have black and white framed photographs of large trees and lillies on our walls and potted bamboo on our mantle. It's chill, and we get compliments.

But I LOVE the black and red. I say do it.
Colors like bright red will get old fast, believe me, so use them sparingly. I suggest a nice twilight blue (it's a blue gray color) it will complement the gray rug and black area rug because it is not at all bright, but the color is saturated enough to stand out from the white walls.

For the lamps do not get mirror silver, get a bushed nickel or pewter finish. These matte finishes are much better on light fixtures than shiny finishes because they won't reflect much of the light, setting a nice mood for the room.

I would use an area rug with several colors and tie in the light grey with black, dark red, turquoise, and medium to dark grey. Black will show dirt and dust, especially if you have any pets.

Do you have a painting or art that would give you a color pallet ?

Micro suede in a medium or dark grey would be excellent for the couch. Really dark wood, or a dark cherry, or ebony, or metal would work for tables and other furniture. The chairs could be either a dark red or turquoise with accent pillows of the same color for the couch.

Window coverings would depend on how much privacy or light you want. Sheers could be in the white to blend in with the walls. Depending on the daylight in the room would determine what color to use for drapes or window coverings.

LIghting for night time can change the whole look of a room. Indirect lighting gives more atmosphere but lamps provide the light for reading. Remember to consider plants and candles for accents. Check craft fairs for ceramic accents to blend into the room.
