Answers:
get a pen and paper... any software which will do what you want it to do, wont be as simple to use as you think. (i know) and im a structural fabricator by trade.
use several bits of A4. draw the base outline, the redraw it, and add walls, doorways and staircases, then draw the outer shell, and then... this is the trick part, give it all to someone who actually knows what theyre doing. you dont understand about load bearing, or stress points, roofing pitches and believe me, theres lots more... so get a ruler, and a pencil and start there... youll be more productive with that, thanany piece of architectural software...
and good luck.. but once you have your design, you sit down with a calculator and price the job, and dont forget to factor in the time required to do the job... last one i did came in at £85, and took almost a month to do the estimate...and by the time the customer had stopped changing their mind it'd gone up to 125k... thats 40% over budget... and the customer always pays... unless you are a builder, i suggest you seek proper professional advice,, before you spend a penny...
a good start is the master builders federation. (uk)
Go to Builder.com and view hundreds of designs off the shelf, pick one you particularly like and adapt it to exactly what you want.
