How can I repair wood paneling?
Question:cable man cut a one-square foot hole in the wood paneling to run cable to the basement. what can i do to make it less noticeable?

I gather the problem is that there are no studs to nail/screw to. Nice, huh? Here are some ideas:
So get some long skinny pieces of wood -like yard sticks or paint stirrers, cut them 2-3" wider or longer than the hole, and apply adhesive such as liquid nails to one side of near the ends. Put them into the hole, then pull them toward the back of the surrounding paneling so the glue squeezes up against back of the surrounding paneling. You may need to apply clamps or some other means to keep them still while the glue dries overnight. No clamps? No problem. Tie string around the middle of the wood pieces, tie the other end of the string around a chair that is tilted on 2 legs away from the wall.
Next day, glue the cut out piece of paneling onto your strips. Use methods already mentioned in the other answers to blend it in. Done.
Option: any chance you or anyone would ever need to get in there again? It COULD make a convenient chase. Or you could HIDE stuff back there. If any of that seems like a good idea, then put a frame around the cut-out piece attached to the surface of it (part facing the room) and extending an inch or so beyond the edge. Now put the piece back in the hole; the frame will lap over the surrounding paneling and keep it from falling through. Now use small wood screws to secure it in place. Done.
Put the paneling back up with some construction adhesive and patch the kerf line with wood filler. You can buy small jars at the home center of various colors that you can mix together to get a color that matches. I use Cherry, Walnut and Pine. Mixing those three you can just about match anything.
You may try and make it look like an access door by making a door with suitable color wood and trim it with some moulding, If it is on an outside wall, then be sure to make it air tight as possible. Use anything from caulking or foam sealer.
