Help me fix the deck??

Question:My husband pressure washed the deck and used a slovent on the traffic areas it looked really good until we sealed it. NOw the area that was cleaned with the solvent look like raw wood and the rest of the deck look shinny and new. what can we do to make the wood that the solvent was used on stop soaking up the finish and look shinny like the rest of the deck?

Answers:
You didn't mention whether the deck was redwood, cedar or treated. So I am going to assume that it is treated wood. When the solvent was used on the traffic areas you have placed a petroleum based product into the wood and the oil based solvent will not leach out of the wood. You mentioned that you had sealed the deck, I am assuming with either Thompson's or Ducks Back or the equivilant. In any case, one must remember that you have to wait at least two weeks before you seal after cleaning so the water content will dry out of the wood and be able to absorb the sealer. Am not real sure if it will ever attain the same color as the rest of the deck. I would try to pressure wash it again and leave it to dry for a few weeks and then once again seal it and see if it looks right. Other than that, it is going to have to be board replacement. Good Luck.
