Is porcelien tile better then ceramic tile on floors?

Question:We have a customer that wants porcelien tile on the bathroom floors because she was told if you drop something on the ceramic it will crack the tile and if you do the same to porcelien it will not break is that correct

Answers:
After 39 years of setting tile I can tell you that for sure porcelin is much more durable than standard clay or quarry tile. Denser material, color all the way through. And depending on what you drop on it , yes it can be chipped, but tile, regardless of what kind, is only as good as how it was installed and what it was installed over.

I would think porcelain to be less durable. Depends upon the thickness, I suppose.
Either will become scratched easily.
I have had porcelain tile on my kitchen floor. Mine cracked because it was not laid properly...I have replaced it with another porcelain tile that is now down properly. It will not be as slick as ceramic tile on a floor. I suggest that the person get a sample of the tile and wet it and test how slick it is. My new tile is 24x24 squares and it looks great in the kitchen! My old floor was not patterned at all and showed the dirt. My new floor is light and has a random pattern in it to resemble Italian flooring and doens't show the dirt hardly at all! Good luck!
Ok, I'm not a specialist with tile, but I have worked with porcelain clay & stoneware clay. Stoneware is so much more durable than porcelain. Stoneware has more sand and grit and is stronger. The porcelain will look nicer and it is more pure white, but I don't think I agree with her saying porcelain is more durable. I also think it depends on how well the tile is installed. Tile is tile and it will break or chip if something hard and heavy is dropped on it. Good luck:)
Porcelaine is a much more durable product. It is much stronger, and harder to chip or crack than ceramic. That does not mean you can drop a bowling ball or sledghammer on it, but normal household items like a glass will not have much impact on a porcelaine.

Porcelaine tiles are often used in commerical projects, and can be either glazed porcelaine or throughbody porcelaine.
Glazed porcelaine is a porcelaine body (usually white, but now a few companies have red body) with a porcelaine glaze on top. It is fired at much higher temperatures than ceramic, thus producing a stronger material. Through body porcelaine has the color all the way through the material. These are usually much more expensive, and used on high traffic commercial applicaitons.
Porcelaine tile is becoming the norm for floor tile applications as consumers are becoming educated about the products they use in their homes. Prices are a little higher than ceramic, but worth the quality.
