Does anyone have a good idea for a cheap yet nice homemade desk.?
Question:

You need to 'think about how you use your desk ... do you need to have your computer monitor, keyboard and mouse there? Do you want to 'write longhand' there, study, do your bills? Where are you going to put your desk? What is just going to 'land there' during the day ... are you a mom, and are your kids going to 'drop things' onto your desk that need fixing, or put their own paperwork there for you to do?
It's actually quite simple to 'make a homemade' desk once you know 'what will be there' and how much 'room' you are going to need to do all of it. If you have a family, you may want to make a 'door desk' ... simply get a flat door (with NO 'hardware' of course) and set it on two 'two shelf bookcases' so that they can 'hold books' that you can reach, but if you want them 'pointing front' where you will sit, you'll need something else in 'back' to hold up the back of the desk. Or you can get a piece of plywood and set it across two 'plastic drawers on wheels' if you want 'drawers' ... or you can get a wooden picnic table and set the benches on top at the back to be your 'bookcases' ...
A desk should be 'convenient for your lifestyle' ... if you move frequently, a 'desk' that you can 'take down' and rearrange in the new place will be 'good' ... if you are 'living where you are until you die' you may want to get an old 'thrift store' desk that is HUGE but has 'everything you want' in a desk. If you 'think outside the box' you'll see that there are many 'good desks' that you can make 'on the cheap' that will look good and will be even better than a 'purchased desk' or a 'put together from modular units' one from an office supply store. It's going to be 'your desk' (or the one you are building for someone else) so you'll need to 'know' what is needed, how much 'room' the different 'things' the desk will 'do' will take, and then think of WHATEVER it is that will 'fit the person using the desk' ... so that they will USE IT, and not just let it get 'buried under stuff' so that it can't be 'used' as a desk.

cinder blocks and plywood? hokey!
U can get 1 of those hard plastic tables at Sam's or Target or K-mart & use as a desk. U can put file cabinets underneath or those plastic wheeled drawers from the same place.
Garage sales/thrift stores or swap meet u can p/u up cheap desks & paint them up. Or even tables & paint them up then get those small cubes that u assemble together for the top for spaces.
Also Target makes for scrapbookers... smaller put together that u can use for under the & put a plywood painted or old closet door. U can also use the assembly drawers/etc at Target for the bottoms as well or on the top. Target has a several different types from wire to wood to more expensive. Wait til they go on sale.. they always have sales.
The most inexpensive way to make a desk is to use a piece of wood or melamine and sit it on top of either 2 small bookshelves or filing cabinets. Both options give you storage space.
