What size should new cement step be?

Question:I have a 96"x50" concrete slab by my front door, and want to have a step poured in front of the slab, as it is too much of a distance from the ground to the stoop. I am wondering how large to have the step made. I want it to look good, as well as being a big help. Anyone knowledgeable in this department? Thanks

Answers:
Make your step 12" deep.

I don't know if you mean your slab is 96" wide or 50" wide at the front. If 50", a step about 36" wide would probably be ideal. If 96", you might want to go a little wider than that so it wouldn't look too small. You can eye-ball that and see what you think.

As far as height, go half of the height of your slab.

ergonomically, a riser of 7" and tread of 11" is considered base. You can adjust the rise as necessary but try to maintain at least 5" height to avoid tripping. The maximum height of the riser should be 9". Some building codes require a handrail if you have more than 3 steps.
