What color should I paint my walls? My couch is a modern 70's looking velvet green couch.?

Question:The couch's color is difficult to describe. When you run your hand across the velvet the color changes to almost a lime looking green. But from a distance the couch is a very dark dark green. I am trying to decide what color to paint the walls. My husband thinks the couch is hideous but I just love it. Most people are telling me to paint the walls a beige color but I need some more ideas. Also I am trying to decide on a accent color. + the floors are a dark reddish color hardwood. Thanks.

I received your email and I would LOVE to help.

First off, it doesn't sound ugly to me at all! 60's and 70's furniture is so in and has become popular in modern design. And I love that you are embracing this color rather than getting rid of it.

Without seeing the shade of green you are dealing with the absolute best thing you could do (and I actually love this option!) is to paint your walls gray. It may sound boring but gray walls are very modern and a great neutral, it will really help to update your couch and keep you away from a dated looking space. It would set off the color of your couch and you could pair in with an accent color in your pillows and accessories. Possible accents could be a plum, blue or yellow. Definitely add white accents to complete this modern look.
My favorite grays right now are:
Pussywillow (SW 7643) ((What my bedroom is!))
Collonade Gray (SW 7641)
Gris (SW7659)
Knitting Needles (SW 7672)

Accent references:
Bee's Wax (SW7682)
Aqua-Sphere (SW 7613)

Email me a picture of the couch and give me more of a description of the style you are going for and I can give you a more tailored evaluation.

The 70's gold color..
How about a faux finish in muted gold tones? A single glaze application is fairly easy to do.
This is the technique I'm talking about, but not in these colors...

Other color options would be a mocha or latte (sherwin williams color) with a metallic glaze. See modern masters metallic paint collection for the colors. The Champagne or pale gold would look beautifiul.

Accent in yellows and white, white is really a neutral color, but white cala lillys would look great.
If I were you I would do one wall where the couch sits in a chocolate brown. The other three walls in a creamy beige. Then as your accent color I would do a russet red color for throw pillows and accessories. This will pull the room together due to the fact that you have that russet color hardwood floors. Also use cream and chocolate too. For drapes if you are using drapes, I would go with a creamy beige real silk side drapes for windows.
