Removing sliding glass patio door?
Question:Ok just bought a house and between the living room and the dining room is a sliding glass patio door... I want to take it out but want to save it. do I need to take out the doors from the frame or can they be left in? HELP!!!
Answers:
The sliding part should lift out of the bottom runner. Get help, they are HEAVY.
The other door may need unscrewing, then same procedure.
You would not want to try to handle a sliding glass door and frame in one piece. It probably weighs something in the neighborhood of 400+ pounds and is large and unwieldy. I would certainly remove any parts, especially glass ones, that would make this tough job easier.
They can be left in. Just take the trim down from around the door and you should be able to determine how it is secured to the wall. Remove what is securing it (nails or screws) and the door should come right out. Of course, don't forget that you will have a hole in your flooring and wallcovering where the door was.
I use a saws all to get them out and an extra hand if I can get one.
Trying to remove such a large and heavy fixture would be hard, to say the least. You will probably find some of the fasteners are located above or below the doors.
