Have vertical siding, want horizontal. Can I cover the existing siding or do I need to remove and start over?

Question:Currently have vertical cedar siding (rabbet edge). Want horizontal siding (synthetic or cedar). I could reuse the existing siding, but it would take a LOT of time.

I will be doing all of the work myself.

Answers:
If the cedar is in fairly good shape, putting new siding over top should be possible.

The biggest problem you will have is trim, especially around windows and doors. It may be difficult to get that to look right, due to the extra thickness.

Cedar being the price it is now, you may find someone willing to salvage your siding if you ask in the right place. I would expect at the very least you would find someone willing to take it off for the siding, may even find someone willing to pay you for it. If it is in good condition.

I would remove the existing siding and take the opportunity to place or replace the vapor shield and check or add insulation.
cover it you get more insulation and it don't show.
you gonna have to take everything out and do it all over again.
