So...that they can make apples...Maybe its so that people don't bring in fake receipt's and get free wood (don't laugh)
It is to indicate that they have checked your reciept against the items you are carrying out and have verified that you are not stealing anything.
they do that at costco also its so they c that u have purchased everything thats in the receipt
So u cant come in later and pick up the same item and try to use the old receipt
Maybe that is their mark, for proof that it is from HOME DEPOT.
My home depot doesn't do this. But some stores may do this so ensure that you have the same amount of items on your cart/bag as is on the recipt. This helps with theft.
I've noticed that only in bad neighbourhoods. They don't do that in my neighbourhood. Anyway, I always refuse to show a receipt when exiting any store; there have been times when I was asked for it in other parts of town. Once I've paid for the merchandise, my business with the retailer has been completed and I am thus not obligated to them in any way, shape or form.

it's in your best interest, because it helps prevent theft, and thus keeps prices down.
I know when we shop at Home Depot they don't mark the receipt at our area store.However,our Sam's Club does just to verify you paid for the items.So,that could be why.
