I actually prefer the brownish brick with color variations. It looks more welcoming.
Unless you are trying to go for a retro look, red brick is far out of fashion, say 50 years, for homes, lighter earth tones are much less objectionable to most people.
I like distressed brick, whatever color. It's got character that new brick does not have. But if I had to choose a color? I guess red.
