Does anyone know the best way to measure for blinds?
Question:I'd like to buy window blinds and I need inside the casement ones. Just so afraid of them not fitting once I get them home. Do I measure exactly side to side or subtract a half inch or what? Anybody good at this out there?
Answers:
I have custom cut thousands of blinds for our customers and what I always ask them is "Are these measurements from casing to casing with no deductions?"
Some people think they need to subtract something for the blinds to fit - but the machines in stores and instructions are made so if we have your exact measurements then the machines do the rest.
The measurement you should be taking to the store is...
Measure your window inside casing (wood to wood) with a metal measuring tape (cloth ones may have stretched over time). Measure the top, middle and bottom of your window.
Take the measurement that is the shortest. That is what the blind needs to be cut too. For length - that will be the same but as far as I know most stores will not adjust length in store but over the counter horizontal blinds are easy to adjust at home if too long...for vertical blinds you need this measurement as they can be adjusted.
Also measure to the closest 1/4" on your measuring tape.
If you are going with miniblinds, faux wood blinds - remember they are always cut to allow 1/4" movement on either side (so they don't rub your casings). The header will be shorter than your vanes (to fit into the mounting hardware). So have the store measure the vanes after cut. If you have a window that is eg 36" wide - inside tight - casing to casing....your finished vane width would be 35 1/2"
Hope this has helped.
There is a tutorial on this website that walks you through the process of measuring for window treatments:

Never subtract from or add numbers to your measurements, unless otherwise instructed. The manufacturer makes all the correct adjustments so that your window treatments fit perfectly, even if you're just buying them off the rack at The Home Depot.
dont measure the actual window..measure the outside of the frame top-bottom side to side
The place we bought ours would not sell them without the salesman coming to take measurements. I measured ours and they are about 8-10 inches longer than normal -- they hang over the sill that much and they are almost an inch shorter than the inside casement width wise. If this is strictly a DYS, take your tape measure with you to the store and your scratch pad.
You get exact measurements and let the person cutting the blinds know that they are exact. In some houses it would be a good idea to also check the measurements midway down the window and at the bottom since occasionally there is a huge difference. If you want the blind to hang straight then it will have to fit inside the narrowest part of the window. Different types of blinds have different clearances so just take notes and let the person doing the cutting make the decision as to what length to cut.
I've always measured the width of the opening exact and bought that size blinds
If you want them inside the window frame, measure them from inside to inside, top to bottom and side to side. When ordering them, the company knows that this is how you measure them so and account for this when making your blinds so that they fit perfectly.
