If I stain a maple wood bedroom suit with ebony stain, will the wood grain show?
Question:This is an antique set, but the wood needs touch up paint & I want to go darker.
Answers:
The grain never changes. It will still be there after you stain. It won't be quite as noticable when it is a darker color.
With just a stain, yes, the grain will show. With a lacquer, the grain will be minimized; with multiple coats it will diminish more.
First you would have to strip the existing finish off. If you applied new stain over the existing, the spots that need touching up would take the stain differently and the piece woild look spotty.
The wood grain will show through if it is a clear stain, not an opaque or solid stain. It won't be a real ebony black though, as the warm wood colour will read through somewhat. With a solid stain it will be black, but you will only notice the wood grain as a texture on the surface, not as a visable grain pattern.
