95% of paint contains toxic solvents, there are many alternatives - why are people so ignorant of this?
Question:I know that solvents are not required to make good paint, for instance there are many REAL low voc paints that do not use these solvents and the performance of that paint is equally comparable to the performance of the more toxic types.
How can one say that 300 G/L is low VOC? that is ridiculous, do you think most people are aware that they are inhaling fumes of ethylene glycol, a solvent banned in paint in California? MANY paints contain Ethylene Glycol and it is highly unnecessary so why do companies continue to put these toxic substances in paint?
Another fallacy is the fact that a day or two after the paint is applied the fumes magically disappear...these solvents may continue to "outgas" for months post application.
If you don't believe there are toxic chemicals in common paints; look at the MSDS sheet and observe the solvent the paint contains. Research the solvent, 99% of time its neurotoxic or carcinogenic when inhaled. Its a fact, stop making excuses and address the issue
Answers:
People are ignorant to this becuase they don't understand change. Society has always been told such-and-such a thing works, and they stick with it until it hurts them. For example, just to stay on topic, when everyone found out that putting lead into paint was fatal; finally woke up to that one. Once something bad happens then.then you will see a switch.
Because we don't have a rocket surgeon like you around to hold our hand and tell us we're stupid. Now let me ask you, does you're question have a point or are you simply showing off?
There are good reasons why manufactures use the formulations they do. Designing anything is always trade offs. Cost is certainly one of the big drivers, if you make a paint that cost more than competitors, you will sell less because people shop by price. Coverage, weathering resistance, workability, toxicity, and many other factors go into design. If something that adds ozone to LA's smog bank, as VOC's do, is banned there, it may have little effect on say Dallas air quality. While you may think 300 is high, it is much lower than past formulations.
all boils down to what people are willing to spend my customers would never spend $40 or $50 a gallon
everything is potentially deadly, cancer causing and banned in California
One word, money. They cost more and people don't want to spend that much.
